To be fair, though, this only is a bad thing if they have a way of getting
around. Too many times, I've been halted by cars getting out of their
spaces, and it APPEARS that I am waiting for the spot, when all I really
want to do is get to the much better handicapped spot ten cars ahead!

Have you gotten any snarky remarks about the handicapped parking yet? I
haven't, but I'm ready for them. If they say I don't look handicapped, I
will say that that proves first impressions can be wrong...for instance, you
sir, at first glance, appear to be intelligent.

The other one I have stored away is "my Physician, the State of Illinois, as
well as the Social Security Administration all certify me to be handicapped.
What credentials do you have that are higher than that?"

No, though my husband says he has gotten angry looks. He said he'd heard of
some DMD parents printing up small explanations on business card stock, and
keeping them handy to give to anyone who gives a nasty look--might teach
them something. I do tend to avoid the handicapped spots if at all
possible, but sometimes, when the next nearest spot is really too far, we
put up the placard and hope that whoever sees us doesn't think handicapped =
wheelchair.

That's a very good point. People will often judge someone else based
on what they *deem* should qualify someone as handicapped but
handicaps can't always be seen by the eye. There could be heart
problems, breathing problems - all sorts of things that deem a person
handicapped.

Well, I used to work a computer store in my younger days, and one of the
cashiers had some sort of arm injury and she got a handicapped parking
permit... I never once saw her walking on her hands into work prior to
that.

People get handicapped tags for all sorts of mindless reasons these days.
It used to be you had to actually be crippled or have a hard time walking;
now you can get it if you have eye problems, hurt arms, or even if you are
too short (swear to Cons, I heard this somewhere).

I can completely understand though why someone with an arm injury may
need a handicapped pass.

Maybe she also had a heart condition. Or breathing condition, not all
disabilities can be seen by the eye.
